Tragic Spate of Deaths in Madhya Pradesh as Eleven Lose Lives to Toxic Liquor

In a harrowing incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, eleven individuals tragically lost their lives due to the consumption of spurious liquor over a span of two days. The victims, hailing from multiple villages in the Banda tehsil, succumbed to poisoning that has also left around 80 others hospitalized, according to local reports.

The alarming episode began to unfold on Saturday night at Banda Civil Hospital, where the first death was recorded. As the hours progressed into Sunday morning, the number of fatalities continued to rise, shocking the local community. The deceased are reported to be from six different villages: Ghooghra Khurd, Nauraj, Bamoora, Patan, Chauka, and Dalpatpur.

In response to this tragedy, local authorities have initiated legal actions with three cases filed based on complaints from the victims. The Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Sagar Range, Shashindra Chouhan, confirmed the suspension of two police officials in connection with the incident – the station house officer of Banda and an outpost in-charge – underscoring the seriousness of the investigation.

Authorities believe that the toxic alcohol may have originated from Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, with Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal noting that initial inquiries suggest a local liquor vendor may be linked to a group known for supplying dangerous spirits. “Our investigations have indicated that there is a gang operating in Lalitpur involved in the distribution of this kind of poisonous liquor,” Pal stated, reflecting the urgent need to address the illicit liquor trade that continues to plague rural areas.

This tragedy highlights a broader issue that has plagued various regions of India, where the consumption of spurious alcohol has led to numerous fatalities over the years. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by unregulated liquor production and distribution, which disproportionately affects vulnerable communities.
