Bangladesh’s Hindu Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Granted Bail Amid Ongoing Legal Troubles

The High Court of Bangladesh has granted bail to Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in two separate legal cases, as reported on Sunday. Despite this development, Das remains imprisoned due to ongoing accusations in four additional cases. His arrest has stirred considerable tension and raised concerns about the treatment of minorities in the country.

Chinmoy Krishna Das, who has been in custody since November 25, 2024, was initially detained for alleged misconduct involving Bangladesh’s national flag during a rally held on October 25 of the same year in Chittagong. Notably, Das is affiliated with the Sammilito Sanatani Jagaron Jote, an organization dedicated to advocating for the rights of Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh.

The two cases in which he has been granted bail relate to serious charges of attempted murder and obstructing law enforcement officials in the line of duty. The attempted murder charge stems from an incident on November 26, 2024, during a confrontation between Das’s followers and lawyers outside the Chattogram Court. The clashes erupted when a bail petition filed by Das was rejected, resulting in the tragic death of a public prosecutor, Saiful Islam Alif, who was reportedly attacked during the turmoil.

Earlier this year, on April 30, 2025, a High Court bench had previously granted bail to the monk in a separate sedition case. Nevertheless, this decision was later suspended by the Appellate Division’s chamber, underscoring the complex legal battles facing Das.

The situation surrounding Chinmoy Krishna Das highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly in light of the increasing tensions and clashes that are becoming more frequent. His organization has become a voice for the Hindu community’s rights, raising questions about the broader implications for religious tolerance and minority rights in the country.
