CJP Raises Alarm Over Arrests of Protesters Amid Tensions; Supreme Court Affirms Right to Peaceful Assembly

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has issued a stern warning regarding the potential for renewed protests following a series of arrests of demonstrators across several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled states. The party claims there has been a significant violation of an agreement with the Union government, which stipulated that no punitive actions would be taken against those protesting peacefully. In light of recent events, the CJP has demanded that state authorities retract any charges against protesters and release those currently detained, threatening to reignite their protest movement if their demands are not met.

Reports indicate that demonstrators have faced targeting and detention by state law enforcement agencies in Assam, Bihar, and West Bengal, raising concerns over the suppression of dissent. In Bihar, law enforcement has confirmed the arrest of 144 individuals on charges of assaulting security personnel during last week’s protests. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, 14 people, primarily from the Muslim community, were apprehended for allegedly attacking police and journalists during a demonstration in Kolkata against recent paper leaks.

In Assam, the situation has similarly escalated, with authorities arresting six individuals and detaining at least 24 others in connection with a showing of solidarity with protests occurring in Delhi. These developments have heightened tensions and drawn criticism from various quarters, including civil rights advocates who argue that such crackdowns on peaceful protests undermine democratic rights.
