Assam Floods Claim 21 More Lives as Crisis Deepens

In a tragic turn of events, the ongoing floods in Assam have claimed an additional 21 lives as the situation in several districts deteriorates. According to reports, the majority of the fatalities occurred in Sivasagar, where 13 individuals lost their lives. Meanwhile, five deaths were recorded in Charaideo, two in Golaghat, and one in Jorhat. This grim statistic has raised the total death toll from the current flooding to 31, as per sources from The Hindu.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that over 560,000 residents have been affected across 16 districts due to the relentless deluge. Sivasagar stands out as the most severely impacted area, with approximately 360,000 people grappling with the consequences of the floods. As of Tuesday evening, more than 12,200 individuals have been evacuated to 71 relief camps set up to provide shelter and assistance.

The floodwaters have been exacerbated by several rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Disang, and Dikhou, which are currently flowing above the danger mark. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that rescue operations are underway, involving the military, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local security personnel working tirelessly to ensure the safety of affected residents.

Flooding is not a new phenomenon for Assam; the state has a history of seasonal floods, primarily caused by heavy rains and the overflow of river systems.
