Delhi Protesters Rally Against Modi Government Amid Education Crisis

In a vibrant display of protest, young demonstrators gathered at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, expressing their discontent with the Modi administration’s handling of educational policies. Among them was 23-year-old Sree, a master’s student from the Indian Institute of Technology, who creatively used a cotton sheet to voice her dissent. The sheet bore the iconic lyrics of a famous 1990s Bollywood song, playfully asking, ‘Choli ke peeche kya hai?’ or ‘What lies behind the blouse?’. This gesture symbolically challenged the authority’s attempts to obscure the ongoing protests, particularly the recent police action against prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Wangchuk, an educator and environmentalist, has been on a hunger strike since June 28, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over allegations of mismanagement in competitive exams. His protest, supported by the All India Students’ Association, has now entered its 21st day and has garnered significant attention from students and activists alike. The police’s heavy-handed approach to his removal sparked outrage among the protesters, prompting Sree and many others to join the sit-in.

Sree revealed that she had been following the events around the Cockroach Janta Party’s organized protest on social media for weeks, and the aggressive tactics employed by law enforcement became a turning point for her. “Seeing how they treated Wangchuk was alarming and infuriating,” she said. Her participation reflects a broader sentiment among students and young professionals who feel that their voices are being ignored by the government, especially concerning critical issues related to education.

The protests at Jantar Mantar are not isolated incidents but part of a growing wave of discontent among the youth in India.
