Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha’s (SBDS) 3rd Edition International Chess Day Celebration 2026 lit up the Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sur Institute of Technology & Sports Complex in Kolkata on 19th July, as a rapid chess extravaganza that brought together well over 300 players across four separate sections — Open, Under-13, Under-11 and Under-9 — in a single-day celebration of the game.
Table Of Content
The scale of participation was the story of the day. The Open section alone attracted 150 players, ranging from grandmaster-strength competitors down to enthusiastic first-timers, while the age-group sections for younger players saw an equally enthusiastic response, with dozens of category winners emerging across boys’ and girls’ events in the Under-13 and Under-9 groups. The sheer breadth of the turnout — spanning categories for men and women, seniors, unrated newcomers and children as young as five — reflected the growing appetite for competitive chess in Kolkata and beyond.
Grandmasters Lend Their Presence
Adding considerable prestige to the occasion, Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua, along with GM Saptarshi Roy and GM Saptarshi Roy Choudhury, graced the event with their presence. Their interaction with and encouragement of the young participants was one of the highlights of the day, giving many junior players a memorable brush with some of the finest names in Indian chess. Their involvement underscored the stature the event has built for itself in just three editions.
Open Section: Mayukh Majumder Tops a Stacked Field
In the seven-round Open rapid event, Mayukh Majumder (rated 2041) took the top honours with a superb 7/7 score, claiming the winner’s prize of ₹15,000. IM Kaustuv Kundu (2290) finished runner-up with 6 points, followed by Suman Maity (1740), also on 6 points, in third place.

A Celebration Well Organised
Beyond the results, the event stood out for the smoothness of its execution — a single-day rapid format spanning four sections and hundreds of players is no small logistical undertaking, and Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha and its organizing team deserve credit for pulling it off seamlessly. Prompt pairings, well-managed playing halls and a warm, welcoming atmosphere throughout the venue ensured that players of every age, from wide-eyed five-year-olds to seasoned veterans, had a memorable experience.
With such an enthusiastic response from the chess community and the continued backing of respected figures like GM Dibyendu Barua, the International Chess Day Celebration looks firmly set to keep growing in stature in the years ahead.
