Irom Sharmila Calls for Collective Action in Support of Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike

Prominent Manipur activist Irom Sharmila has urged citizens across India to rally behind Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since June 26. Wangchuk’s protest is part of the Cockroach Janta Party’s campaign, which calls for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan due to claims of mismanagement in competitive examinations.

Sharmila, known for her own 16-year-long hunger strike against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, emphasized that the responsibility of enacting systemic change does not rest solely on Wangchuk’s shoulders. In a phone interview from her residence in Bangalore, where she lives with her twin daughters and husband, Sharmila stated, “It is not just Sonam’s burden; we all need to take action. It is crucial for every concerned citizen to join this movement. If enough people step forward, the government will have no choice but to respond to our demands.”

Sharmila, whose activism has inspired many across India, reiterated the importance of collective action in bringing about meaningful change. “Social change requires persistent efforts and unified voices. It is imperative that we do not allow any individual protester to become a martyr,” she remarked. She believes that a significant number of people participating in such protests would overwhelm security forces and compel the government to address the issues raised.

Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike, now in its 20th day, has already resulted in a weight loss of over 9 kilograms. He is a renowned educator from Ladakh and is using his platform to advocate for necessary reforms in India’s education system. Wangchuk’s protest has garnered attention, highlighting the broader concerns regarding governance and the management of competitive examinations that affect thousands of students across the country.

The Cockroach Janta Party, which Wangchuk is affiliated with, has gained traction for its unconventional approach to politics, focusing on grassroots activism and citizen engagement. As public support for Wangchuk’s cause grows, Sharmila’s call to action reinforces the notion that collective civic engagement is vital in shaping the future of India.
