Abhishek Banerjee, who serves as the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has been embroiled in legal disputes and has alleged that these issues stem from a significant rise in ‘unreasonable complaints’ since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took power in the state following the Assembly elections held in May. His assertions were articulated during proceedings at the Calcutta High Court, where he sought to address the multitude of accusations against him.

The timing of Mamata Banerjee’s remarks is notable, occurring on the same day that Abhishek provided a voice sample regarding allegations of incendiary remarks he made during the election campaign. In June, TMC leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar hinted at further fragmentation, suggesting that a group of 20 TMC MPs in the Lok Sabha would consider merging with a different political entity. These developments underline the growing challenges Mamata Banerjee faces as she strives to maintain her party’s cohesion and address the concerns of her members while countering the BJP’s influence in West Bengal.
