Congress Demands Clarity from Centre After US Senatorial Bill Targets India’s Oil Imports

The Congress party raised concerns on Wednesday, urging Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to clarify the Indian government’s stance following the introduction of a bill in the United States proposing a 100% tariff on imports from India and four other nations that procure oil from Russia. This initiative, led by a bipartisan group of U.S. senators, also targets China, Hungary, Slovakia, and Azerbaijan, while exempting 15 European countries that continue to acquire Russian gas, citing their limited energy reliance on Moscow.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera highlighted this critical situation during a press briefing, emphasizing the need for transparency from Minister Goyal. Khera pointed out that the proposal, originating from Republican senators and supported by former President Donald Trump, raises significant diplomatic issues for India, particularly given its historical stance on energy independence and relations with Russia.

The proposed legislation has sparked discussions about India’s foreign policy and its delicate balance between maintaining relations with the U.S. and engaging with Russia amidst global geopolitical tensions.
