Political Turmoil: TMC MLA Switches Allegiance Amid Investigations, Assam Rifles Camp Targeted in Manipur

In a significant political shift, Madan Mitra, a prominent Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA and a known loyalist of party leader Mamata Banerjee, has resigned from her faction to align himself with a rebel group within the party. This unexpected move follows the recent summoning of Mitra’s family by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged municipal recruitment scam. Mitra, however, insists that his departure from Banerjee’s camp is unrelated to these legal troubles.

The resignation comes amidst growing concerns over the internal dynamics of the TMC. Mitra, who represents Kamarhati, expressed his inability to function effectively within the party’s current structure, alleging that the leadership is prioritizing the advancement of TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee rather than focusing on strengthening the organization as a whole.

In the realm of security, a separate incident unfolded in Manipur’s Senapati district, where a camp of the Assam Rifles was attacked by a mob after the security forces initiated an operation against suspected members of armed groups. The attack occurred late Tuesday night, following the forces’ search operation based on intelligence reports that indicated the presence of cadres from the NSCN(I-M), a faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland. According to the Defense Ministry, while property was damaged and vehicles set ablaze, thankfully, there were no reported injuries from the disturbance.

The Assam Rifles had been conducting patrols in the area after receiving credible information about these groups operating outside their designated camps. The NSCN(I-M), known for its separatist agenda in Nagaland, has been under a ceasefire agreement, yet tensions remain high in the region due to sporadic violence and political instability.
