Suspect in Baruipur Minor’s Rape-Murder Dies in Police Encounter

A man accused in the horrific case of a minor’s rape and murder in Baruipur, West Bengal, was reportedly killed in an encounter with police on Wednesday. The deceased, identified as Prabhash Mondal, was one of three individuals arrested in connection with the crime that has shocked the local community and sparked widespread protests.

According to reports from the police, the encounter occurred while they were reconstructing the crime scene. The Superintendent of Police stated that Mondal attempted to grab a weapon from an officer and opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate. Tragically, he was shot during the exchange and later declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

This incident follows the grim discovery of an 11-year-old girl’s body, which was found stuffed in a sack in a pond in the Surjyapur area. She had been reported missing by her father a day earlier, leading to an initial missing person complaint. However, as investigations progressed, the charges escalated to include rape, gang rape, murder, and destruction of evidence, coupled with violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The brutal nature of the crime ignited significant outrage among residents, leading to protests that blocked roads and railway lines. Demonstrators expressed their anger by burning tyres and vandalising police vehicles in a bid to demand justice for the young victim. In the heat of the protests, two other suspects were reportedly apprehended by local residents and assaulted before police intervened.

The tragic case not only highlights the pressing issue of child safety in India but also underscores the community’s growing frustration with the justice system.
