A devastating landslide at a road tunnel construction site in the Kelladi region of Wayanad, Kerala, has led to the tragic death of at least two individuals, with reports indicating that several others may still be trapped beneath the debris. The incident occurred on Tuesday, following heavy rainfall that swept through the area, causing a significant amount of soil to shift during excavation activities.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has confirmed that the landslide happened at the Wayanad-Kelladi tunnel site, where crucial infrastructure work is underway to connect Malappuram and Wayanad districts. Eyewitness accounts and local officials indicate that seven people are currently unaccounted for, while seven others have been successfully rescued from the debris, as reported by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan.
Chief Minister Satheesan expressed deep concern over the circumstances leading to the accident, emphasizing that the contractors involved in the project neglected orders from the Public Works Department and local authorities to clear the excess soil that had built up at the site. “The accumulated soil should have been removed; it was well known that any rainfall could lead to such a catastrophic event,” he stated. The region experienced approximately 225 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, adding to the already hazardous conditions at the construction site.
The rescue operations are currently being conducted by police and disaster management teams, who are working tirelessly to locate those who are still missing. Local residents have expressed their fears and frustrations, highlighting the dangers posed by inadequate safety measures at construction sites, especially in areas prone to landslides during the monsoon season.
As rescue efforts continue, the state government has vowed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability among contractors and officials. The tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with large-scale infrastructure projects and the critical need for stringent safety protocols and adherence to guidelines to prevent future disasters.
