Bengal Shaken by Minor’s Rape and Murder; Three Arrested Amid Political Controversy

In a disturbing incident that has rocked the Baruipur area of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl. The girl’s lifeless body was discovered on Sunday, enclosed in a sack, submerged in a pond in Surjyapur, a day after she was reported missing by her father.

The case began when the minor was reported missing on Saturday, prompting her father to file a complaint with the local police. As investigations progressed, law enforcement officials added serious charges, including rape, gang rape, murder, destruction of evidence, and violations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, according to police sources.

The horrifying nature of the crime has led to widespread public outrage, resulting in protests across the region. Demonstrators have blocked roads and railway lines, igniting tires and vandalizing police vehicles in their anger. During these protests, locals took matters into their own hands, allegedly assaulting two men suspected to be involved in the crime. A third individual, reported to be 26 years old and linked to the suspects, was reportedly killed by an enraged mob.

Compounding the situation, a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, identified as Santanu Mondal, has also been detained on suspicion of assisting one of the suspects in fleeing the area. Reports indicate that Mondal intervened after residents apprehended the two suspects and attempted to hand them over to the police, complicating the investigation further.
