Manipur Chief Minister Pays Tribute at BJP MLA’s Funeral Amid Ongoing Ethnic Tensions

Manipur’s Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand made a significant visit to Churachandpur district on Saturday to attend the funeral of Vungzagin Valte, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA who fell victim to the state’s ongoing ethnic violence. This visit marks the first by a chief minister to the predominantly Kuki district since violent clashes erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, resulting in widespread unrest.

Valte, who served as a minister in the previous government under N Biren Singh, died on February 20, 2023, nearly three years after suffering severe injuries during an attack attributed to an armed group of the Meitei community known as Arambai Tenggol. The incident occurred while Valte was returning from a meeting with the chief minister in Imphal on May 4, 2023. Following his death in a Gurugram hospital, his body was transported back to Churachandpur, where it remained in a mortuary until Saturday.

The funeral was held against a backdrop of heightened tensions and a shutdown called by several Kuki-Zo organizations, reflecting the deepening divisions that have marked the region since the violence began. In a notable development, Valte’s family initially refused to proceed with the cremation of his body until their demands were met, which included the establishment of a separate district for the Zomi tribe and a formal inquiry by the National Investigation Agency into the circumstances surrounding his death.

However, the family ultimately decided to go ahead with the cremation due to the deteriorating health of Valte’s wife, who expressed a desire for her husband to be laid to rest. This decision reflects the complex interplay of personal grief and political demand that has characterized the recent events in Manipur, where ethnic tensions have profoundly affected community relations and governance.

As violence continues to affect the lives of many in the region, the chief minister’s visit to Churachandpur serves as a crucial moment for reflection on the need for peace and reconciliation in Manipur.
