Controversial Film ‘Satluj’ Removed from Zee5 Just Days After Launch

The film ‘Satluj’, which delves into the sensitive topics of extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances carried out by the Punjab police during the tumultuous 1990s, has been abruptly removed from the streaming service Zee5. Directed by Honey Trehan and originally titled ‘Punjab ’95’, the film features popular Punjabi actor Diljit Dosanjh in a leading role. It made its debut on the platform on a Friday evening, but by late Sunday, the film had vanished without a trace.

In a brief statement released via its social media channels, Zee5 announced that ‘Satluj’ would remain unavailable in India until further notice due to “current developments.” However, the company did not specify the nature of these developments that led to the film’s sudden removal. The platform reassured its subscribers by stating, “We remain committed to exploring every appropriate avenue through due process to bring the film back to our audience at the earliest available opportunity.”

Although ‘Satluj’ is no longer accessible, the dialogue and discussions it inspired continue unabated. Zee5’s post conveyed gratitude for the overwhelming support the film received, expressing hope for its return. The film’s narrative, rooted in the struggles and realities faced by individuals during a dark chapter in Punjab’s history, had already ignited significant conversations about justice, accountability, and the role of the police.

This is not the first time that Trehan’s work has encountered hurdles. The original version of the film, ‘Punjab ’95’, faced extensive scrutiny from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after its completion in 2022. Reports indicate that the board demanded a staggering 127 cuts, severely hampering the film’s release. Trehan disclosed in a previous interview that these cuts rendered the film nearly unrecognizable. The version that was briefly available on Zee5 was untouched, allowing viewers to experience the film as intended.

The removal of ‘Satluj’ from Zee5 raises questions about freedom of expression in Indian cinema, particularly concerning films that tackle contentious historical events.
