In a significant move aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation, India and Japan have committed to strengthening their partnership in the realms of artificial intelligence, energy resilience, and economic security. This agreement was formalized during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Minister Sanae Takaichi, who is visiting New Delhi for three days.
Following their discussions, Takaichi emphasized the necessity of forging a ‘mutually complementary cooperative relationship,’ especially in light of the growing complexities in the global political environment. This visit is particularly noteworthy as it follows Modi’s earlier trip to Tokyo in 2025, where Japan expressed its intention to increase its investments in India significantly, projecting an infusion of over $61 billion into the Indian economy over the next decade.
As part of the bilateral discussions, Modi revealed that India and Japan have developed a joint roadmap focused on economic security, particularly aimed at enhancing supply chain resilience in critical sectors such as semiconductors. This collaboration comes at a crucial time when both nations are navigating uncertainties in global markets and supply chains.
Additionally, the two countries have agreed to establish approximately one thousand biogas and organic fertilizer plants across India, a move that aims to bolster energy security while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and energy independence.
Moreover, the partnership will extend to the exploration of critical minerals, a key component in the production of high-tech goods, thereby further strengthening the resilience of their supply chains. These advancements not only signify a deepening of Indo-Japanese relations but also align with the broader objectives of the Quad, which comprises the United States and Australia alongside India and Japan.
As reported, trade between New Delhi and Tokyo reached an impressive $27 billion in the financial year 2025-’26, underscoring the importance of this partnership in the current economic climate. The agreements between India and Japan are expected to pave the way for enhanced collaboration in various sectors, ultimately contributing to the stability and growth of both economies in an increasingly interconnected world.
