West Bengal Government Set to Introduce Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill During Assembly Session

The newly elected government in West Bengal is reportedly preparing to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the ongoing State Legislative Assembly session. The proposed legislation aims to establish a common set of civil laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and succession for all citizens, irrespective of their religion.

According to reports, the government intends to table the Bill during the current Assembly session and seek its passage. If enacted, West Bengal would join states such as Assam and Uttarakhand that have taken steps toward implementing a Uniform Civil Code, while similar discussions have also taken place in other BJP-ruled states.

The proposed move is expected to trigger significant political debate inside and outside the Assembly. Supporters argue that a Uniform Civil Code would promote equality before the law and ensure uniform civil rights for all citizens. Critics, however, contend that such legislation could affect the religious and cultural autonomy of different communities and are expected to oppose the Bill.

The Assembly session is likely to witness extensive discussions, with both the ruling party and the opposition presenting their respective positions before the proposed legislation is put to a vote.
