Maharashtra Delays Farm Loan Waiver Implementation, Disbursement to Start on July 5

The government of Maharashtra has officially announced that it will not meet its previously set deadline of June 30 for the disbursement of funds under the newly approved farm loan waiver scheme. The state’s Agriculture Minister, Dattatray Bharane, informed the Assembly on Monday that the process for crediting loan waiver amounts through the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Shetkari Karjmafi Yojana will commence on July 5.

The delay in rollout is attributed to the necessity for financial provisions to be finalized via supplementary demands, which need legislative approval before they can be signed off by the governor. Bharane explained that, “After the supplementary demands are approved by the legislature, they will require the governor’s assent.” He reassured farmers that once the governor gives his approval, the loan waiver funds will be swiftly credited to the eligible farmers’ accounts beginning July 5.

In response to concerns raised in the Assembly, Bharane also emphasized that no farmer would be deprived of the benefits of the scheme due to the lack of an Agristack Farmer ID. This unique identification number is crucial for accessing various agricultural benefits, including crop insurance and loans. Farmers have been encouraged to apply for these IDs, but the government’s commitment to ensuring that all eligible beneficiaries receive support is clear.

Several legislators expressed their views during the assembly session, urging the government to reconsider certain eligibility criteria associated with the farm loan waiver scheme. In light of these requests, Minister Bharane noted the government’s openness to making adjustments. He referenced Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ earlier remarks about the establishment of a sub-committee to explore potential modifications in the eligibility requirements.

The farm loan waiver initiative is a significant measure aimed at alleviating the financial burdens faced by farmers across Maharashtra, a state that has seen its agricultural sector grappling with various challenges. As the state gears up for the implementation of this scheme, the government’s proactive approach in addressing concerns reflects its commitment to supporting the agricultural community, especially in times of distress.
