Strengthening India’s Role in the Indo-Atlantic Amid Shifting US Strategies

The evolution of geopolitical landscapes often hinges on terminology, as evidenced by the United States’ recent pivot in its defense strategy in the Pacific. In 2018, the rebranding of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) to USINDOPACOM not only marked a significant change in nomenclature but also underscored a burgeoning partnership between the US and India. This transition, however, has sparked concerns regarding the potential overshadowing of the Indian Ocean Region and India’s pivotal role as a security provider in the area.

In the backdrop of rising tensions with China, both the US and Japan recognized the need for a concerted effort to counteract Chinese assertiveness, particularly in the South China Sea. The Indian government must leverage its geographic advantages and historical relationships to foster stronger ties within the Indo-Atlantic framework.

The Indo-Atlantic, a term that encompasses both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, represents a strategic theater where India can enhance its international partnerships, particularly with the US and Japan. By reinforcing these alliances, India can not only contribute to regional stability but also ensure the security of vital shipping routes that carry approximately 80% of the world’s energy supply.

As the US recalibrates its focus away from a solely Pacific-centric approach, it is crucial for India to step up its diplomatic engagements and operational collaborations in the Indo-Atlantic.
