Kshatriya Group Criticizes Film ‘Chauhaan’ Teaser for Caste Insensitivity

On Monday, a prominent Kshatriya organization expressed its discontent with the teaser for the forthcoming Hindi film ‘Chauhaan,’ directed by Neeraj Yadav and featuring actor Ajay Devgn. The Kshatriya Parishad labeled the teaser as “irresponsible and disrespectful” for invoking the Rajput clan’s name in a manner they believe inflames caste and communal tensions.

The organization firmly rejected attempts to manipulate Rajput history or identity for political gain, stating, “We will not accept the appropriation of our heritage for electoral or ideological agendas.” The controversy primarily stems from the teaser’s portrayal of a demonstration in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, which took place in 2018. During the teaser, Devgn’s voiceover minimizes the impact of pellet guns and water cannons used against protesters, describing their effects as merely “limited damage” and suggesting they were just temporary measures.

Adding fuel to the fire, the voiceover ominously proclaims that an “answer is on its way” for the demonstrators, urging them to “tell the Pathaans: Chauhaan is coming.” This choice of wording has provoked outrage among many Kashmiris, who took to social media to express their disapproval. Critics highlighted that pellet guns have caused severe injuries to thousands in the region, particularly during the unrest from 2016 to 2019, questioning the film’s insensitivity to the real suffering experienced by the local populace.

The Kshatriya Parishad further lamented that the Rajput identity is being misappropriated in a political narrative that does not truly reflect the community’s interests. They emphasized that at a time when representation of Rajputs in mainstream media is lacking, such portrayals only serve to exacerbate misunderstandings and conflicts rather than foster dialogue and respect.

As ‘Chauhaan’ gears up for its scheduled release on October 1, 2027, the film’s promotional material continues to draw scrutiny, raising questions about the responsibility of filmmakers in tackling sensitive historical and socio-political topics. The Kshatriya group’s concerns reflect broader issues within Indian society regarding the portrayal of caste and communal identities in popular culture.
