In a significant political shift, two Lok Sabha MPs from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction have announced their decision to join the rival group led by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. This development adds to the ongoing speculation surrounding potential defections among the Uddhav Sena members in the Lok Sabha, where six out of the nine MPs could be contemplating a switch.
The lawmakers making the move are Nagesh Patil Ashtikar from Hingoli and Omprakash Nimbalkar representing Osmanabad. Reports suggest that four additional MPs, including Sanjay Dina Patil from Mumbai North-East, Sanjay Deshmukh from Yavatmal-Washim, Sanjay Jadhav from Parbhani, and Bhausaheb Wakchaure from Shirdi, may also align themselves with the Shinde faction. It is anticipated that this formal merger will take place on Monday, as indicated by various media outlets.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, referred to the ongoing realignment within the Uddhav Sena as a well-planned “operation,” emphasizing the success of this political maneuver. Shinde himself remarked, “We don’t leave operations incomplete; we finish what we start,” underscoring the determination of his faction to consolidate power.
Ashtikar, one of the rebel MPs, expressed that he holds no grievances against his former leader, Uddhav Thackeray, who he claims has always backed him. However, he revealed that the recent atmosphere of distrust and criticism from Thackeray’s supporters prompted him to reconsider his position within the party. “Until Thursday, I felt grounded, but as the situation escalated, I realized it was no longer feasible to remain,” he stated, reflecting on his decision.
This political upheaval within the Shiv Sena is a continuation of the factional struggles that have characterized the party in recent years, especially following the split that occurred in mid-2022. The Shinde faction has since gained control over a significant portion of the party’s leadership and resources. As these MPs shift their loyalties, it raises critical questions about the future dynamics of the Shiv Sena and its influence within Maharashtra’s political landscape.
