Uttar Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Pratap Maurya has stirred political waters by suggesting that a significant number of Samajwadi Party (SP) Members of Parliament (MPs) are on the verge of defecting. In a statement made on Wednesday, Maurya estimated that between 25 to 26 MPs from the SP are ready to break away, though he emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not actively orchestrating this shift.
According to Maurya, these defections are expected to occur as the Assembly elections of 2027 approach, indicating that the internal dynamics within the SP may lead to self-driven departures. He remarked, “Samajwadi Party is not being run by Akhilesh Yadav,” hinting at a leadership crisis within the opposition party. Currently, the Samajwadi Party holds 37 seats in the Lok Sabha and 10 in the Rajya Sabha, making it a notable player in Indian politics.
The Deputy Chief Minister’s assertions were echoed by Om Prakash Rajbhar, a state minister and ally of the BJP. Rajbhar commented that a “major split” within the Samajwadi Party is imminent, further fueling speculations regarding the stability of the opposition party as it gears up for the upcoming elections.
The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is currently charged with anticipation as the 2027 elections draw nearer. Insights from Maurya reveal that prominent figures within the Samajwadi Party, including Ram Gopal Yadav, a key MP and cousin of the party’s founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, have already taken steps that could signal shifting loyalties. Reports suggest that Yadav has even submitted a letter to BJP leader Amit Shah, potentially indicating a formal alignment with the ruling party.
This situation raises questions about the viability of the Samajwadi Party under its current leadership. With internal dissent brewing and a looming election on the horizon, the party may face significant challenges in maintaining its political base. The forthcoming months could witness a reshaping of Uttar Pradesh’s political landscape as various factions within the Samajwadi Party reevaluate their allegiances in light of the anticipated electoral battle.
