Hoshiarpur launches diarrhoea prevention campaign from June 16 to July 31
Hoshiarpur/ June 16/Daljeet Ajnoha
Following guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Civil Surgeon of Hoshiarpur, Dr. Mandeep Kamal, has launched a district-wide “Diarrhoea Prevention Campaign” running from June 16 to July 31, 2026. The initiative aims to prevent diarrhoeal disease, ensure timely treatment and reduce severe outcomes among children under five.
Dr. Kamal said ORS‑zinc corners have been set up across all government health facilities and Common Man Clinics in the district to ensure the availability of oral rehydration solution (ORS) and zinc for children suffering from diarrhoea. She emphasized that ORS solution and the recommended dose of zinc are highly effective in preventing dehydration during diarrhoeal episodes, and urged caregivers to begin administering ORS as soon as symptoms appear and to contact the nearest health facility without delay.
District Immunisation Officer Dr. Seema Garg said the health department will conduct awareness activities at anganwadi centres, schools and within communities during the campaign. She advised exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, timely vaccination including rotavirus vaccine, use of safe drinking water, maintenance of cleanliness, and regular handwashing with soap before eating and after using the toilet to prevent diarrhoea.
Dr. Garg added that the campaign will run in collaboration with the education department, the women and child development department, water supply and sanitation authorities, panchayati raj institutions and other stakeholders to amplify outreach.
Officials appealed to residents to keep homes and surroundings clean, use hygienic sanitation facilities, dispose of waste properly and safeguard drinking water. They urged immediate contact with local health centres when children show signs of diarrhoea, stressing that collective community participation is essential to reduce diarrhoeal illness and mortality.
