Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Acquitted in Sexual Assault Case; Prashant Kishor Triumphs in Bankipur Bye-Poll

A Delhi court has acquitted Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India, in a sexual harassment case involving allegations from six women wrestlers. The decision has sparked disappointment among the complainants, particularly Vinesh Phogat, a prominent wrestler who had participated in protests demanding Singh’s resignation. Phogat expressed the group’s intention to appeal the ruling, highlighting the ongoing struggle for accountability in cases of sexual misconduct.

Singh, who is also a Member of Parliament representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), welcomed the verdict, stating it brings joy to him and his supporters. He reiterated his stance during the initial phases of the case, asserting that he would accept the consequences if proven guilty, even expressing a willingness to take his own life in such a scenario.

The allegations against Singh came to light in January 2023 when several wrestlers, including Olympic medallists like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, organized protests accusing him of intimidation and harassment. The case involved seven complainants, which included a minor, who alleged that Singh solicited sexual favors in exchange for professional assistance. The harassment claims included 15 separate incidents of alleged molestation and other forms of sexual misconduct.

While Singh was acquitted of one woman’s allegations, the broader implications of this case continue to resonate in the wrestling community and beyond. The wrestling fraternity has been vocal about the need for significant reforms and protective measures to ensure the safety of athletes, particularly women.

In a separate political development, Prashant Kishor, the chief of the Jan Suraaj party, made headlines by winning the Bankipur bye-poll on his electoral debut. This election was necessitated by the resignation of Bharatiya Janata Party’s National President Nitin Nabin from his MLA position. Kishor’s victory in Bankipur marks a significant entry into the Bihar political landscape, showcasing his influence and the potential for new dynamics in the state’s political arena.
