In a sharp rebuke, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of remaining uncharacteristically silent and complying with directives from the United States “like an obedient servant”. This statement comes in the wake of a recent incident in which three Indian sailors lost their lives due to American military actions off the coast of Oman.
Gandhi took to social media to voice his concerns, emphasizing that the United States has not expressed any remorse for the casualties nor has it issued an apology for the strikes that targeted commercial vessels. He pointedly remarked that instead of showing accountability, the US continues to issue orders that India seems to be following without question. This criticism highlights a growing sentiment among some Indian leaders about the nation’s diplomatic posture regarding its relationship with the US.
The backdrop to Gandhi’s remarks is a conversation between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where India officially expressed its protest against the American military operations in the Gulf region. Jaishankar stated on social media that such lethal actions against commercial shipping cannot be justified, underscoring India’s concern for the safety of its citizens and vessels operating in international waters.
During the dialogue, Rubio emphasized that all commercial vessels should adhere to orders issued by US forces, who are purportedly working to maintain peace and security in the sensitive Strait of Hormuz. The US Department of State’s Principal Deputy Spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, reiterated that the US remains firm on not tolerating any violations of its blockade against Iranian oil transport.
The blockade, which has been in effect since April 13, is part of the US strategy to limit Iran’s oil exports amid escalating tensions in the region. This situation has raised significant concerns among nations reliant on the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global oil supply. As India navigates its alliances and commitments internationally, the implications of these developments on its maritime security and diplomatic relations are yet to be fully realized.
