Madhya Pradesh Court Clears 11 Accused in Khargone Riots, Cites Weak Evidence

A Madhya Pradesh court has acquitted 11 individuals who were charged with rioting and arson during the violent clashes that took place in Khargone district in April 2022. The court’s ruling, delivered on Monday, underscored significant shortcomings in the prosecution’s case, emphasizing that the evidence presented was insufficient to substantiate the allegations against the accused.

The communal unrest erupted on April 10, 2022, during a Ram Navami procession in the Talab Chowk area of Khargone when tensions flared over loud and provocative music being played. The resulting violence led to one death and left at least 24 people injured. Additionally, ten houses were set ablaze, prompting widespread concern over the deteriorating communal harmony in the region.

In its judgement, the court pointed out that out of 11 eyewitnesses called to testify by the prosecution, eight failed to positively identify any of the defendants. This lack of reliable testimony significantly weakened the government’s case against individuals accused of being involved in the violence, including Ibadat Ali, Sadiq Khan, Abdullah Khan, and others. The prosecution had contended that these accused were wielding stones, swords, and even petrol bombs during the clashes, leading to extensive property damage in the Bhatwadi area.

Following the unrest, the Madhya Pradesh government took a controversial step by demolishing homes and shops owned by Muslim residents in Khargone, an act that has been criticized for exacerbating communal tensions and raising questions about the fairness of the state’s response. The abrupt demolitions were seen by many as punitive measures aimed at the Muslim community, further complicating the landscape of communal relations in the state.
