Tragic Loss: Indian Shooting Icon Jaspal Rana Passes Away at 49

Jaspal Rana, a celebrated name in Indian shooting sports and a revered coach, has sadly passed away at the age of 49. His demise was linked to complications arising from a heart condition, as confirmed by Dr. Balbir Singh, the chief of interventional cardiology at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Delhi. Rana had recently experienced health issues while returning to India from the shooting World Cup held in Munich, Germany.

Rana’s legacy in the world of shooting is monumental. Widely regarded as the most successful athlete in Commonwealth Games history, he secured a remarkable total of 15 medals across four editions of the Games. This impressive tally includes nine golds, four silvers, and two bronzes, establishing him as a dominant figure in the sport. After his illustrious competitive career, Rana transitioned into coaching, where he continued to make impactful contributions by mentoring some of India’s top shooters.

Among those he coached were Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary, Anish Bhanwala, and Chinki Yadav. Notably, under Rana’s guidance, Bhaker achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Indian shooter to win two medals at a single Olympic Games, clinching bronze in both the women’s and mixed team 10-meter air pistol events at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Rana’s accolades extend beyond his medal count. In recognition of his contributions to sports, he received the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1994, which is India’s second-highest sporting honor. In 1997, he was honored with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India. More recently, in 2020, he was awarded the Dronacharya Award, the highest recognition for sports coaches in the country.

The news of Rana’s untimely passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from prominent figures in Indian sports and beyond. President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences, stating that Rana’s dedication and commitment to excellence would continue to inspire future generations of athletes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, acknowledging Rana’s significant contributions to Indian sports and praising his relentless pursuit of perfection in coaching.
