Tragic Attack in Manipur: Two Kuki Community Members Killed Amid Rising Tensions

In a devastating incident in Manipur’s Kamjong district, two individuals from the Kuki community lost their lives following a militant attack on Thursday. This violent event also resulted in the destruction of multiple homes in the Kultuh Kuki village, as confirmed by a senior police officer.

This attack is part of a wider pattern of violence in the region, escalating after the recent discovery of the bodies of six men from the Naga community. These men had been taken hostage by an armed group affiliated with the Kuki community on May 13. The police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths, which have only heightened tensions between the two communities.

On the same day, incidents of arson were reported not only in Kamjong but also in Senapati district, signifying a troubling surge in hostilities. Reports indicate that the state headquarters of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), the ruling party in neighboring Nagaland, was vandalized after it was ransacked by unidentified individuals. Such incidents are indicative of the deep-seated rivalries and ongoing strife in the region, with both communities grappling with a legacy of mistrust.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed his condolences for the six Naga individuals who were killed, describing the act as “heinous.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bringing the responsible parties to justice and mentioned that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is actively involved in the inquiry. The Chief Minister also condemned the recent killing of a farmer from Lansan Kuki village in Tamenglong district on Tuesday, reiterating that violence has no place in society.

The situation in Manipur remains precarious, with the United Naga Council and various civil society organizations calling for peace and understanding between the conflicting communities. As investigations continue, the authorities are under increasing pressure to restore order and address the root causes of this unrest.
