In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves through the educational community, an 18-year-old student preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) tragically took her own life in Nagpur. Akansha Chaturvedi, a diligent aspirant from Mauganj district in Madhya Pradesh, was found deceased on May 20. It was only two weeks later that her family discovered a handwritten note revealing her deep despair and feelings of inadequacy regarding her repeated attempts at the NEET examination.
The note suggested that Chaturvedi felt overwhelmed and lacked the courage to face the exam once more, a sentiment that resonates with many students grappling with academic pressures. Her untimely death has ignited a fierce backlash against the current education policies of the Narendra Modi-led government, particularly from opposition leaders who have accused Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan of mismanaging the NEET examination process.
During the last NEET-UG examination held on May 3, over 2.2 million candidates participated, but the National Testing Agency (NTA) was compelled to cancel the exam on May 12 amidst serious allegations of a paper leak. These allegations have raised concerns about the integrity of the examination process, leading to further anxiety among students like Chaturvedi who aspire to secure a place in medical colleges across the country.
Chaturvedi’s situation highlights the immense pressure faced by students in India’s competitive education landscape. The recurring incidents of examination irregularities and the stress associated with high-stakes tests have been subjects of national debate, prompting calls for reform in the education sector. Following her death, the Nagpur Police initially registered the case as an accidental death, having reportedly found no initial suicide note. However, the revelation of Chaturvedi’s handwritten message has drawn renewed scrutiny of the systemic issues plaguing India’s education system.
As the nation mourns the loss of a bright young mind, it raises critical questions about mental health support for students, examination integrity, and the broader implications of educational policies that place undue stress on youth. The tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for reforms that prioritize the well-being of students in an increasingly competitive academic environment.
