Adityanath Rejects Clerics’ Call to Recognize Cow as National Animal

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has publicly opposed the recent appeal by certain Muslim clerics to designate the cow as India’s national animal. Speaking at an event in Bijnor, he emphasized that the cow is already considered a mother figure in Indian culture, stating, ‘The cow is our mother,’ reflecting deep-rooted sentiments among many Hindus.

Adityanath revealed that he had learned about the demands made by some religious leaders, describing their requests as unnecessary. He asserted that the bond between humans and cows transcends generations and does not require formal recognition. ‘Gaumata [Mother Cow] is a self-proclaimed national mother, and doesn’t need to be declared as the national mother,’ he remarked, underscoring the emotional and spiritual connection many people have with the animal.

The Chief Minister criticized the duality of demands from various groups, suggesting that while some seek the cow’s recognition as a national symbol, they may simultaneously support practices like cow slaughter. Adityanath reiterated his commitment to protecting cows, warning that the state government would enforce strict measures against those involved in cow slaughtering.

This statement comes on the heels of a proposal by Maulana Arshad Madani, the president of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind (Arshad Madani faction), made on May 24. He argued that recognizing the cow as a national animal could prevent the contentious issue of cow slaughter from being politically manipulated. Various Muslim organizations have echoed this sentiment, advocating for a resolution to foster communal harmony regarding the cow’s status.
