Thirty Indians Arrested in the US for Illegal Truck Driving Amid Crackdown

In a significant enforcement action, U.S. authorities apprehended thirty Indian nationals accused of working illegally as commercial truck drivers. This operation took place between May 11 and May 15 in Arizona and is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing public safety.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that the operation, dubbed “Operation Checkmate,” led to the arrest of a total of 52 individuals, with 36 found operating semi-trucks. Along with the Indian nationals, the detainees included individuals from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia. Many of those arrested held commercial driving licenses issued by states such as California, New York, Washington, and Virginia, while some lacked any driving credentials altogether.

According to the CBP, most of the arrested individuals possessed Employment Authorization Documents that had been issued during the Biden administration but are now considered invalid. This situation has raised questions about the immigration policies that allow some foreign nationals to work in the U.S. Despite having documentation, these individuals were found to be in violation of immigration laws.

Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin W. Caudle emphasized the importance of the operation, stating that it was intended to identify individuals who present significant risks to public safety. The agency noted that under former President Donald Trump, measures were introduced by the Department of Transportation to prevent unqualified foreign drivers from obtaining licenses for commercial vehicles.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal immigration and the potential implications for public safety in the U.S. The presence of Indian-origin truck drivers, particularly in light of recent reports involving illegal activities, has raised alarms within both the Indian community abroad and back home.
