In a distressing incident in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, a truck driver from West Bengal was fatally shot during an ambush on Friday, while a police constable sustained injuries. The driver, identified as 65-year-old Nitish Das from Hooghly district, was reportedly transporting essential goods, specifically rice for the Food Corporation of India, when the attack occurred. The incident has raised serious concerns over security and public safety in the region.
The ambush unfolded on National Highway 202, a key route connecting Imphal to Ukhrul town, between the villages of Leingangching and TM Kasom. This area falls under the jurisdiction of the Litan Police Station. Das was pronounced dead at the scene, highlighting the grave risks drivers face while operating in conflict-affected regions. The injured constable, 34-year-old Disingam Maringmei from Imphal West, suffered a bullet wound to his knee and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Eyewitness reports suggest that prior to the ambush, local protesters had blocked roads in the Shangkai area in a bid to halt the movement of trucks. This act of civil unrest points to ongoing tensions in the region, which have been exacerbated by socio-political unrest. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the attack, suggesting it was orchestrated by groups with ulterior motives to disrupt the government’s efforts to restore peace and stability in Manipur.
The state government has been actively working to ensure the safety of goods transporters on the Imphal-Ukhrul highway, deploying personnel from the Border Security Force and the Central Reserve Police Force to escort vehicles. Despite these measures, incidents of violence continue to pose a threat to both the drivers and security forces in the area.
In light of this tragic event, authorities are being urged to enhance security protocols and address the underlying issues fueling unrest in Manipur. The death of Nitish Das serves as a stark reminder of the precarious situation in the region and the urgent need for effective conflict resolution strategies.
