Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the controversial leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, has been granted a 30-day parole, marking his 16th release from prison since his conviction for rape in August 2017. His latest departure from prison occurred on Tuesday and has once again reignited debates about parole practices in India, particularly concerning high-profile convicts.
During this parole period, Singh will reside at the Dera’s headquarters in Sirsa district, Haryana. While he is not allowed to formally gather his followers at the organization’s premises, he has been permitted to connect with them through virtual addresses. This is the fifth occasion since his conviction that he has been allowed to visit the Dera headquarters. In previous releases, Singh has often stayed at his ashram located in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.
Singh’s history of parole raises questions about the criteria and motivations behind granting such requests. His last release was on January 5 for a 40-day parole. Prior to that, he had been allowed out on parole on August 5 to celebrate his birthday on August 15. In addition, during the run-up to the Delhi Assembly elections, he received a 30-day parole in January 2025, following a 21-day furlough in April 2025.
In India, furloughs can be granted without specific justification after a prisoner has served a certain portion of their sentence, whereas parole is typically given under extraordinary circumstances. Singh’s frequent releases have sparked criticism and concern among various social groups and activists, who argue that such privileges are often extended to influential individuals, undermining the justice system.
Singh was sentenced to 20 years in prison following his conviction in 2017, which involved serious allegations of sexual assault against two of his disciples. His continued releases have not only affected public sentiment but also played a role in local political dynamics, as his followers are known to exert considerable influence during elections.
