Supreme Court Calls for NTA’s Response in NEET Paper Leak Controversy

The Supreme Court of India has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to respond to a series of petitions regarding the alleged paper leak in the 2026 undergraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The court’s notice highlights a growing concern that the NTA appears to have overlooked past lessons in managing exam integrity, as reported by Bar and Bench.

The NEET, which is crucial for admissions to undergraduate medical courses across the country, faced significant turmoil earlier this year when the examination, held on May 3, was cancelled on May 12 due to allegations of a paper leak. This incident drew the attention of more than 22 lakh students who participated in the examination, and it has sparked widespread outrage and demands for accountability.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, expressed disappointment over the NTA’s apparent failure to learn from previous incidents. Similar allegations of paper leaks and irregularities were reported during the 2024 NEET, prompting the court to issue previous orders aimed at ensuring the integrity of the examination process.

In light of the recent developments, several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court, particularly by the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA). This federation has called for a complete overhaul of the NTA, advocating for a more robust, technologically advanced, and autonomous examination body to prevent future lapses and restore confidence in the system.

The ongoing situation raises serious questions about the management of critical examinations and the measures in place to protect the integrity of the selection process for aspiring medical professionals in India. As the NTA prepares to respond to the court’s notice, all eyes will be on the agency to see how it plans to address the issues raised and what steps it will take to prevent such incidents in the future.
