Bangla Pokkho Leader Garga Chatterjee Secures Bail Amid Controversy over EVM Misinformation

Kolkata, India – Garga Chatterjee, the head of the pro-Bengali advocacy group Bangla Pokkho, was granted bail by a court on Friday in connection with a significant case initiated by the cybercrime division of the Kolkata Police. This decision follows Chatterjee’s arrest on May 12 for allegedly disseminating false information regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) ahead of the crucial West Bengal Assembly elections.

The allegations against Chatterjee arose from a complaint lodged by an official from the Election Commission, prompting the cybercrime division to intervene and register a suo-motu case. Notably, there had already been a first information report (FIR) filed against him at the Maidan Police Station based on the polling official’s concerns. However, Chatterjee remained in custody primarily due to the ongoing suo-motu investigation.

Following the recent court ruling, Chatterjee is expected to be released by either Friday or Saturday, as confirmed by Kausik Maiti, a fellow member of Bangla Pokkho. This ruling marks a pivotal moment for Chatterjee, who had previously secured bail in related matters but was unable to extricate himself from the main case until now.

The controversy surrounding Chatterjee’s arrest stems from his social media posts, which claimed tampering and other malpractices associated with EVMs during the electoral process. Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand expressed concerns that these statements led to confusion and differing perceptions among various political factions. The police had issued notices to Chatterjee on two occasions, urging him to provide further explanations regarding his claims.
