India’s Steady Reliance on Russian Oil Persists Amid U.S. Sanction Waivers

In a recent statement, an official from India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas affirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to importing Russian oil, regardless of the sanctions imposed by the United States. Sujata Sharma, the joint secretary of the ministry, emphasized that India’s oil procurement strategy has remained consistent, operating independently of American waivers.

Sharma addressed reporters during a media briefing, stating, “We have been sourcing oil from Russia prior to the waiver, during the waiver period, and continue to do so now.” This declaration underscores India’s strategic approach to ensure its energy security by focusing on commercial viability rather than external political pressures.

The background to Sharma’s remarks is the recent U.S. decision to issue waivers for Indian refiners, allowing them to import Russian oil that had been stranded at sea due to geopolitical tensions. On March 5, the U.S. allowed Indian entities a 30-day grace period to buy this oil, a situation that was later extended to other nations as well. Last month, these waivers were further prolonged until May 16, demonstrating the complex interplay between international relations and the energy market.

In addition, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that the temporary general license for accessing stranded Russian oil was intended to stabilize global oil markets. However, Sharma reassured that India’s crude oil supplies remain unaffected, stating, “Waiver or no waiver, our supplies will not be impacted, and we are making all necessary arrangements to ensure this remains the case.”

The Indian government’s assertive stance on Russian oil imports is reflective of its broader energy strategy, which prioritizes economic considerations, particularly in light of fluctuating global oil prices and the country’s rising energy demands.
