India has voiced its serious concerns regarding a recent drone attack on the Barakah nuclear facility in the United Arab Emirates, labeling the incident as a “dangerous escalation” in the already volatile region of West Asia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India issued a statement on Monday, emphasizing the unacceptability of such actions and urging all parties involved to exercise restraint and revert to diplomatic dialogue.
The drone strike occurred on Sunday, leading to a fire at the Barakah plant, located approximately 200 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi. As the UAE’s primary source of electricity, the nuclear facility plays a crucial role in fulfilling around 25% of the country’s energy requirements. Fortunately, local authorities reported no injuries or adverse effects on radiation levels following the attack, as the projectile impacted an “electrical generator outside the inner perimeter” of the site, according to the UAE’s defense ministry.
Authorities revealed that the drone was one among three that had entered the UAE from the western border, while the other two drones were successfully intercepted. The unfolding situation has prompted investigations to ascertain the origins of the attack, with heightened vigilance expected in the region. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the strike as an “unacceptable act of aggression,” asserting its right to respond to any hostile actions against its territory.
In the aftermath of the incident, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deep alarm, categorizing attacks on nuclear installations as “totally unacceptable” and a breach of international law. The general climate of tension surrounding nuclear facilities underscores the importance of international regulations aimed at preserving peace and security in the region.
This incident raises significant concerns not only for the UAE but for the wider geopolitical dynamics in West Asia, where conflicts have continued to simmer. India’s call for restraint and dialogue reflects its commitment to promoting stability in the region, highlighting the importance of constructive engagement in addressing security challenges. As nations grapple with the implications of such aggressive actions, the focus remains on protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring the safety of civilians in conflict-prone areas.
