Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has leveled serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of manipulating the recent Assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal with the complicity of the Election Commission. His comments, made on social media, echo the sentiments of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has also raised concerns about the integrity of the vote counting process.
In his statement, Gandhi claimed that more than 100 seats in West Bengal were essentially ‘stolen’ from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the party led by Banerjee. He pointed out a pattern of alleged electoral misconduct that he believes has been a recurring theme in various elections, including those in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Maharashtra, where the BJP has emerged victorious.
Following the announcement of the election results, which saw the BJP gaining a significant advantage in West Bengal, Banerjee did not hold back her criticism of the Election Commission, labeling it as “the BJP’s commission.” She voiced her frustrations, stating that the BJP had ‘looted more than 100 seats’ and even recounted her own experience of being ‘beaten’ at a counting center.
The final tally revealed that the BJP secured 206 out of 294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly, while the TMC managed to win just 80 seats, with one seat still under contention as counting progressed. Meanwhile, in Assam, the BJP is poised to continue its rule for a third consecutive term after winning 82 of the 126 Assembly seats, bolstered by the National Democratic Alliance which obtained a total of 102 seats.
These developments have sparked widespread discussions and debates among political observers and opposition parties. Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, expressed his discontent regarding the election outcomes and the broader implications for democracy in India. As the post-election landscape unfolds, both the Congress and TMC are likely to pursue further action to contest the results, signaling a potential escalation in political tensions in the coming weeks.
