The counting of votes for bye-elections across seven Assembly seats in five Indian states commenced on Monday, generating significant interest among political observers and citizens alike. In Maharashtra, the spotlight is on Sunetra Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president, who has established a substantial lead in the Baramati constituency. As of now, she is ahead by an impressive margin of 150,342 votes against RY Ghutukade of the New Rashtriya Samaj Party.
The counting process is set to span a total of 24 rounds, and currently, the results reflect Pawar’s strong position after 17 rounds. This election is particularly poignant as it is being held in the wake of the tragic death of her husband, Ajit Pawar, who passed away in a plane crash on January 28. Ajit Pawar was a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, having served as Deputy Chief Minister and played a pivotal role in the NCP.
The tragic incident that claimed Ajit Pawar’s life occurred when a small aircraft crashed near an airstrip in Baramati town during its second landing attempt. Alongside him, two pilots, a flight attendant, and his security officer lost their lives. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, a wing of the civil aviation ministry, which is working to ascertain the details surrounding this unfortunate event.
Sunetra Pawar assumed her role as Deputy Chief Minister just days after her husband’s passing, taking her oath on January 31. She has also been appointed as the leader of the legislative party for the NCP, marking a significant moment in Maharashtra’s political landscape. As a sign of respect for Ajit Pawar, the Congress party made a notable decision to withdraw its candidate from the Baramati seat, indicating the deep political ties and mutual respect in this constituency.
As the counting progresses, attention is also focused on several other key constituencies in Karnataka, where the Congress party is making a strong showing. The bye-elections are seen as a crucial test for the political alliances and strategies of various parties ahead of the upcoming general elections. Voter sentiment and the performance of candidates in these bye-polls could set the tone for future political dynamics in these regions.
