Puducherry’s Chief Minister, N Rangasamy, has successfully secured his position in the Assembly elections by winning the Thattanchavady constituency, defeating his opponent E Vinayagam from the Neyam Makkal Kazhagam. Rangasamy, who leads the All India NR Congress, received a total of 10,024 votes, surpassing Vinayagam by a margin of 4,441 votes.
In addition to his victory in Thattanchavady, reports indicate that Rangasamy is also ahead in the Mangalam constituency, although the Election Commission has yet to publicly release the trends for this seat on its official website. As of 4 PM on the day of the results, the National Democratic Alliance, guided by the All India NR Congress, was reportedly leading in 17 out of the total 30 seats, while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-Congress coalition was tracking ahead in five seats. Additionally, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has emerged victorious in one seat, with its ally Neyam Makkal Kazhagam leading in another.
The Puducherry Assembly consists of 33 seats, out of which three members are nominated by the Union government. These nominated members possess the same legislative powers as the directly elected 30 MLAs. To achieve a majority in the Assembly, which requires 16 seats from the elected members, a coalition or party must secure at least 17 seats when including the three nominated members.
The electoral contest followed the Election Commission’s extensive review of the electoral rolls in Puducherry, alongside similar efforts in 11 other states and Union Territories. However, the number of voters registered in Puducherry saw a decline of 77,367 as a result of this revision process. This fluctuation in voter registration highlights the dynamic nature of electoral engagement in the Union Territory, reflecting potential shifts in political allegiances and public sentiment.
As the political landscape of Puducherry continues to evolve, the outcomes of this election will be crucial in shaping the governance and policies in the region. The results not only signify the popularity of Rangasamy and his party but also underscore the ongoing competition between various political factions in this Union Territory.
