As the counting of votes from the West Bengal Assembly elections progresses, the early trends have shown a notable lead for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing her determination that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will ultimately prevail. At 1:40 PM, reports indicated that the BJP was leading in approximately 192 constituencies, while the TMC was ahead in around 94. To secure a majority in the 294-member Assembly, a party or coalition needs to claim at least 148 seats.
In a message to her party members, Banerjee urged them to maintain their spirits and not to lose hope, insisting that the TMC would emerge victorious “after sunset.” This statement reflects her confidence, despite the current trends suggesting a significant BJP advantage. She characterized reports touting the BJP’s success as “fake news,” accusing the party of orchestrating misinformation as part of its election strategy.
Banerjee further alleged that the counting process was being manipulated, claiming that in nearly 100 seats, the counting had either stopped or was being unduly influenced. She reassured her party candidates and counting agents not to vacate their positions, emphasizing that the initial phases of counting often reflect voter strongholds and that the true picture will emerge as the counting progresses. “Do not let fear take hold,” she cautioned in a video message.
The Chief Minister voiced concerns about the role of the Election Commission, suggesting that it was exerting undue influence through central paramilitary forces during the counting process. As the day unfolds, the TMC is holding on to hopes that the remaining rounds of counting will reveal a more favorable outcome for the party.
As the political landscape in West Bengal continues to evolve, the TMC remains steadfast in its mission to retain power in the state. With multiple rounds of counting still to come, the final results may still hold surprises for both the party and its supporters. The tension in the air is palpable, with party workers and voters alike awaiting the final verdict on this pivotal election.
