Assam Assembly Election 2026: Himanta Biswa Sarma Maintains Lead in Jalukbari, Gaurav Gogoi Lags in Jorhat

The counting of votes for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections commenced on Monday, and initial trends reveal that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading in the Jalukbari constituency. After seven rounds of counting, Sarma, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has established a significant advantage over his Congress opponent, Bidisha Neog, with a margin exceeding 30,000 votes. The Election Commission has indicated that a total of 18 rounds of counting will take place.

In a contrasting scenario in Jorhat, the Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi is currently trailing behind the BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by approximately 16,000 votes after ten rounds of counting. This election marks Gogoi’s inaugural attempt at the Assembly level, having previously served as a Lok Sabha MP for Jorhat. Meanwhile, Goswami, a seasoned politician with a track record of five terms in the Assembly, is vying for his third consecutive win.

As the count progresses, early data shows the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is ahead in 97 constituencies, while the Congress-led coalition has claimed 26 seats. The BJP is leading in 78 seats with the Congress securing 24, indicating a substantial lead for the ruling party. In the 126-member Assembly, a majority requires 64 seats, making the ongoing counts crucial for both parties.

Polling, which took place on April 9, witnessed an exceptional voter turnout of 85.9%, marking the highest participation rate in Assam’s electoral history.
