Major Upset in Kerala Elections: Congress Triumphs Over LDF with Key Wins

The 2026 Kerala Assembly elections have marked a significant shift in the political landscape, with the United Democratic Front (UDF) emerging victorious over the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). Notable victories include seasoned Congress leaders Ramesh Chennithala and VD Satheesan, signaling a potential change in leadership as the UDF looks towards forming the next government.

In the Haripad constituency, Ramesh Chennithala secured his win against CPI candidate TT Jismon, achieving a decisive margin of 23,377 votes. This victory reinforces Chennithala’s longstanding influence within the Congress party and positions him as a frontrunner for the chief ministerial role should the UDF secure a majority. VD Satheesan matched this success in Paravur, defeating CPI’s ET Taison by a commendable 20,600 votes. With both leaders gaining significant support, the UDF’s prospects appear bright for the upcoming assembly.

Another notable result came from Puthuppally, where Congress MLA Chandy Oommen—son of the late former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy—retained his seat with an impressive victory margin of 52,907 votes, overcoming CPI(M) candidate KM Radhakrishnan. Oommen’s win not only signifies personal success but also underscores the Oommen family’s deep-rooted connection with the constituency and the party’s enduring popularity there.

On the other hand, the LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, faced challenges as several of its ministers were defeated in their respective constituencies. Vijayan himself managed to maintain his position in Dharmadam against Congress’ VP Abdul Rasheed, winning by a margin of 19,247 votes despite earlier reports indicating he was trailing. His success, however, was overshadowed by the loss of at least six ministers, including Veena George in Aranmula and MB Rajesh in Thrithala, highlighting the electoral setbacks faced by the ruling party.

Furthermore, the defeat of popular CPI(M) MLA KK Shailaja, known for her pivotal role during the pandemic, against Congress state chief Sunny Joseph adds to the narrative of the LDF’s declining support. The results suggest a significant resonance of public sentiment against the current government’s policies and effectiveness.
