Behind the glitzy facade of Bollywood lies a contrasting world of grit and raw emotion, a theme artist Ketaki Sheth captures masterfully in her latest exhibition and book, titled “Flashback.” The collection showcases a series of black-and-white photographs taken between 1985 and 1993, revealing the often-overlooked realities of film production.
One striking image features the iconic actress Rekha, captured in a moment of quiet reflection, curled up on a sofa as she gazes into the distance. While her presence commands attention, the photo also unveils the chaotic backdrop of a film set: lighting rigs, fragments of a glass table, and even a birdcage, hinting at the complexities of the environment in which these stars operate. Such details illuminate the contrast between the polished performances seen on screen and the unvarnished reality behind the scenes.
Another memorable shot features Poonam Dhillon in a Chevrolet, her smiling face framed by the car’s side window. A sense of nostalgia permeates the image as Dhillon is seen preparing for a scene in the Hindi film “Kasam” at Film City in Mumbai. The low-lying ruins in the background, described by Sheth as resembling “anthills,” add an intriguing layer to the composition, suggesting the remnants of an era past while highlighting the evolving landscape of Bollywood.
Sheth’s work transcends mere documentation; it invites viewers to engage with the stories behind the images. By isolating the vibrant personalities of stars alongside the often-anonymous crew members and aspiring actors, she captures fleeting moments of intense activity that challenge traditional narratives of glamour in the film industry. The photographs serve as a reminder that every grand cinematic creation is rooted in a tapestry of human experiences, aspirations, and behind-the-scenes interactions.
The “Flashback” exhibition, curated by Devika Daulet-Singh of Photoink, recently concluded in Delhi, yet it leaves an enduring impact. With 57 captivating photographs, Sheth reminds us that the allure of Bollywood is not just in the luminous performances, but also in the collective effort and sweat that brings these magical stories to life. As the audience, we are invited to reflect on the duality of glamour and grunge—one that forms the backbone of India’s vibrant film industry.
