In a significant political development, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh announced on Sunday that a petition has been submitted to the Chairperson of Rajya Sabha, CP Radhakrishnan, demanding the disqualification of seven party MPs who recently declared their merger with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move not only alters the dynamics within the Upper House but also raises questions around party loyalty and the anti-defection law in India.
Before the split, the AAP held a total of 10 seats in the Rajya Sabha, while retaining three seats in the Lok Sabha. The revelation regarding the merger was made by AAP MP Raghav Chadha during a press conference, where he stated that two-thirds of the party’s Rajya Sabha members were in favor of aligning with the BJP, which he argued falls within the constitutional provisions that govern such mergers.
Chadha was accompanied by fellow AAP MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal during his announcement. Amidst this, he claimed that other AAP MPs, including Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, and Swati Maliwal, expressed their support for the merger. It’s noteworthy that except for Maliwal, all the MPs in question were elected from Punjab, where AAP currently holds the reins of power.
However, Singh strongly condemned the actions of these seven MPs, labeling it a “betrayal of the people’s mandate,” especially given the significant victory AAP achieved in Punjab. He emphasized that these members were elected to serve the interests of the party and its supporters, and their decision to leave raises serious ethical concerns regarding political allegiance.
The political landscape in India is often riddled with issues of defection and party loyalty, making this situation particularly poignant. The AAP’s response to this incident might set a precedent for how political parties address internal dissent and defection in the future, especially with the looming elections. As the political tension escalates, all eyes will remain on the Rajya Sabha and how the Chairperson responds to AAP’s petition.
