In a tragic incident on Saturday, two members of the Tangkhul Naga community lost their lives in a shooting carried out by suspected militants in Ukhrul district, Manipur. The attack unfolded in the afternoon along National Highway 202, near the Litan area, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a convoy traveling from Imphal to Ukhrul. Reports indicate that six vehicles were struck during the assault, resulting in the immediate deaths of both victims.
The deceased have been identified as Chinaoshang Shokwungnao, a retired soldier from the Naga Regiment hailing from Tashar village, and Yaruingam Vashum from Kharasom. Their untimely deaths have sparked outrage and concern among local communities, prompting Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to strongly condemn the violence. In his response, he declared that the investigation into the incident would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Following the attack, security forces launched a major operation aimed at apprehending those responsible for the heinous act. Chief Minister Singh took to social media to express his condolences and assured the community that the state government is committed to restoring peace and security in the region. Notably, this violent episode occurred just a day after Singh’s visit to Ukhrul, where he had engaged in peace talks and emphasized the need for heightened security measures along the highway, in light of rising tensions between various communities.
The Litan area has been a focal point for escalating tensions since early February when an altercation involving members of the Tangkhul Naga and the Kuki-Zo communities led to serious confrontations. An earlier incident resulted in the injury of a Tangkhul Naga individual, which further inflamed hostilities and led to days of arson and violence among local groups. The ongoing conflict has placed immense strain on community relations and has raised concerns about the safety of civilians in this region.
The state government, alongside security agencies, is now facing mounting pressure to address the underlying issues fueling these conflicts while ensuring the safety and security of all residents. As investigations progress, local leaders and citizens alike hope for a swift resolution that will prevent further loss of life and restore calm to the affected communities.
