A devastating boating accident on the Yamuna River near Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, has resulted in the loss of at least 10 lives, with several others still unaccounted for. The incident unfolded around 3:15 PM on Friday when a boat, carrying approximately 25 to 27 passengers, collided with a pontoon bridge, causing it to capsize. The boat was reportedly overcrowded, raising concerns about safety regulations for tourist boats in the region.
According to Mathura’s Deputy Inspector General of Police, Shailesh Kumar Pandey, the collision was the primary factor leading to the boat’s loss of balance and subsequent overturning in the deep waters of the river. Eyewitness accounts describe the chaotic scene as onlookers attempted to assist those in distress. So far, authorities have retrieved 10 bodies from the site of the accident, while 17 individuals have been rescued.
District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh confirmed that all passengers aboard the ill-fated boat were tourists hailing from Punjab, who were traveling between Vrindavan and adjacent areas. The area is known for its religious significance and attracts numerous visitors, particularly during festive seasons. As rescue operations continued, local authorities worked diligently to locate any remaining individuals who may be missing.
In light of this tragedy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and has instructed officials to expedite rescue efforts and provide medical assistance to the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his sympathies, highlighting the need for improved safety measures in water transport, especially in popular tourist destinations.
This incident raises urgent questions regarding the safety protocols for passenger vessels operating on the Yamuna River, emphasizing the critical need for adherence to regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future. As investigations into the accident proceed, the focus will likely turn to ensuring that similar incidents do not occur again, as river transport remains a vital mode of travel in the region.
