Assam and Bihar Governments to Release Protesters Amid Exam Irregularities Row

The governments of Assam and Bihar, both led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have announced their decision to release protesters who were arrested during demonstrations against alleged irregularities in public examinations. This move follows a series of agitations that erupted last week, primarily focusing on the handling of competitive exams.

The protests began on June 6 in Delhi, initiated by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The CJP accused the minister of mishandling the examination process, which spurred a wave of solidarity protests across several states, amplifying the voices of the aggrieved students. In light of the growing unrest and following the resignation of Pradhan on Saturday, both Assam and Bihar have decided to take a step back and de-escalate the situation.

On Monday, the Bihar government made it clear that no legal actions would be pursued against individuals who participated in the protests held prior to 6 PM on Sunday. Similarly, the Assam government has echoed this sentiment, signaling a willingness to withdraw the FIRs filed against protesters. This gesture aims to restore calm and address the concerns raised by the demonstrators.

However, the CJP has expressed dissatisfaction with the state governments’ responses, claiming a “complete breach” of an agreement made with the Union government. The party’s spokesperson, Ashutosh Ranka, emphasized that the promise of no police action against peaceful protesters should have been upheld. He called for the complete withdrawal of all cases against the agitated individuals and insisted on the immediate release of those detained during the protests.
