A group of former bureaucrats has voiced strong condemnation of the police’s excessive use of force against young protesters exercising their democratic rights in New Delhi. The Constitutional Conduct Group expressed its dismay over what it termed ‘brutal police action’ against peaceful student demonstrators who were articulating legitimate grievances affecting youth across the nation.

The protests began in the capital on June 6, initiated by the Cockroach Janta Party, calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan amid allegations of misconduct in conducting competitive examinations. This movement escalated significantly on Monday when police intervened violently during a demonstration, a response that invoked outrage among the public and former officials alike.

On that day, a large crowd of thousands converged at Jantar Mantar, following the hospitalization of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for three weeks.
