Supreme Court Dismisses Urgent Plea Over Police Action Against Protesters

The Supreme Court of India declined to expedite a hearing on a petition claiming excessive police force was employed against demonstrators marching towards Parliament. The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party on Monday, in a display of dissent against government policies.

During proceedings on Wednesday, Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed frustration with the petitioner’s request for urgent attention, stating, “Don’t waste our time and don’t waste your time.” The plea’s presentation before the bench, which included Justice V Mohana, was met with skepticism, as the court was not inclined to review video evidence of the alleged police misconduct.

The petition emerged in the aftermath of a significant confrontation on Monday, where security forces reportedly utilized tear gas and engaged in lathi charges to disperse the crowd. While protest leaders were detained to prevent their advance, some protesters managed to rally near Parliament and other central Delhi locations, escalating tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement.

Moreover, the Cockroach Janta Party has raised serious allegations regarding the use of pellet guns by police forces, which are officially categorized as a “non-lethal” means of crowd control by the Union government. These weapons, containing rubber or plastic pellets, have been known to cause severe injuries, particularly to sensitive areas such as the eyes, raising concerns about the safety and rights of protesters.
